Poker Face

Well I had a good friend invite me to play poker last night if I felt up to it and I decided to go. We started a poker group quite a few years ago and I along with this good friend THE MAN are the only original regular players left. Others have joined the group and play regularly but they have joined the group in years 4,5, or 6.

It is fun LOW STAKES (if you lose 10 bucks it was a bad night) poker. Well most of the time but more on that later.

Anyway, he lives about 25 miles north of me so Tracey offered to drive me to the poker game and pick me up so I would not be too tired. It was GREAT!!

I had a great time with everyone. There was a new couple last night that played and they were very nice people. It was clear that they understood Texas Hold'em but other games they struggled with.

I did pretty well. I was up a little bit and I knew it was only a matter of time before one player that was there was going to start piping up a "No Limit" game of Hold'em.

See the problem there is he get's VERY aggressive. His style of play is perfect for the casino's. His philosophy is to win and win a good amount. Again, perfect for casino's or large stakes poker games.

The problem is this group of poker players is low stakes. Noone wants to hit somebody for 25 bucks and take all their money. This player does not seem to pick up on that philosophy. He has been talked to about it but it does not seem to change. We have gone extended periods of time without inviting him thinking he would get the hint but that has not worked either.

It has gotten to the point where when THE MAN is setting up a poker game people are asking him if "THE PLAYER" is going to be there and if he is they are not interested in playing. This puts THE MAN in a pickle because he is friends with this person.

I have gotten used to it and for the most part keep an even keel about it. I know that when he gets behind he bets aggressive trying to catch up and if he gets money he bets aggressive trying to build his pot. Unless I have a GREAT starting hand I just fold. That worked for me last night. I won a little but I donated the winnings to the host for giving up his home for us to play.

I think though that THE PLAYER came out winning quite a bit and that burned the bridge with a few folks that won't be back if he is playing. It's a shame because he is a nice and funny guy. He just does not pick up on the need to adjust his playing according to the crowd you are playing.

He has really beeen playing with a different group a lot. I'm not ever going to have NO LIMIT at my house anymore. He is wanting to do a big tournament sometime soon. We should do all dealer call games and play with nickels as well. Remember when we had 5 cent bets. I think he even broke the 10 cent as the lowest chip. He wanted to do a 10 cent ante last night meaning 80 cents per dealer. I was down $6 until no limit. I basically lost $16.

He even said that he thought the couple didn't like him. He's right. They played with him once before.

His style is fine for casino's or high stakes. The only problem is he does not adjust his game for where he is at. He is always on the WIN AS MUCH AS I CAN mode.

His style is a bit reckless at times and he would get his clock cleaned by a couple of older gentleman I know and have played with quite a few times up at Choctaw.

But at the right table he could make a fortune.

I know one older guy that comes in with ragged overalls a cowboy hat that has definately seen better days and ragged out boots. He chews on a cigar. Nice guy but he would sniff out "The Player" in about one trip around the table and he would go after him and he is ruthless. I stay on his good side and he takes it easy on me. Check's out or bets low. But if he feels someone is trying bully him he will go after you and never stop. And he has DEEP Pockets.

I got out of him that he has a few cattle that he raises and sells. Turns out he has a few THOUSAND cattle and me is a millionare. So a hundred dollar bet to him is my 50 cent bet

This all reminds me of the scene in Thomas Crowne Affair where he bets $10K on a golf shot - twice. As for THE PLAYER, there are some people who are just missing the "people sense" gear in their heads. They'll never get it.

He's an idiot on playing friendly poker.. Sure, I love to win, but would never do it to piss off my good friends. NO LIMIT is not bad if you don't have a numb nut playing.
